Faculty of Built Environment (FAB) – Our Journey Through Time
Since its inception in 1967 as the School of Applied Arts, the Faculty of Built Environment (FAB) has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally offering just four programmes to 60 pioneering students, we have expanded our academic portfolio and emerged as a leading institution for architecture, planning, surveying, and design education in Malaysia.
1970s – 1980s
This era marked the diversification of programmes, with the introduction of Industrial Design in 1975 and Landscape Architecture in 1985, alongside the strengthening of building-related disciplines.
1990s
This decade of transformation included a move to new facilities at Kampus Tahir Majid in 1992, the introduction of the Building Surveying programme in 1994, and a rebranding as the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU) in 1997. By 1999, UiTM attained full university status, further expanding the faculty’s academic reach.
2000s
The faculty continued to strengthen its foundation with the introduction of the Park and Amenity Management programme in 2001 and the establishment of UiTM Puncak Alam in 2005, which became a significant hub for teaching and research.
2010s – 2020s
In 2016, the Design-Based segments were relocated to Puncak Alam, consolidating the faculty’s strength in multidisciplinary education. The year 2022 marked a major restructuring with the formation of the College of Built Environment (CBE), ushering in a new era of academic integration and excellence.
Today and Beyond
In 2025, the faculty proudly reclaims its identity as the Faculty of Built Environment (FAB), now home to more than 15,000 students across 13 programmes. With a vision firmly grounded in sustainability, innovation, and impact, FAB remains committed to nurturing future leaders in the built environment and contributing meaningfully to both national and global development. This dedication to innovation and sustainability inspires hope for a brighter future.
